Description

Wikipedia - NGC 6820 is a small reflection nebula near the open cluster NGC 6823 in Vulpecula. The reflection nebula and cluster are embedded in a large faint emission nebula called Sh 2-86. The whole area of nebulosity is often referred to as NGC 6820.

Updated 7/26/2022
I put a blue color mask on the image and did one more round with the ACDNR denoise process. There was a bit too much noise on the last revision. I hope that this is the final revision until the weather cools off and the humidity drops, then I will add more hours to this image and see if I can take it up a notch.

Updated 7/25/2022
I went back to the SHO/ForaxX version with stars. I toned down the stars before combining them with the narrowband starless image.
The SHO ForaxX starless version is interesting to me but I think it's a bit over the top. I left it in the mix.

Update 7/24/22
I added a few more hours of narrowband to the mix.
I wanted to go with something more dramatic so I combined the SHO with a ForaxX pallette and I like the result.
I processed this one without stars and went for the dramatic. It may be a bit over-the-top but I like it.
There was still a fair amount of noise, so I may add a few more hours of narrowband when the temperature cools off, it's been very hot lately and I can't cool my camera down to where I like it. It's also been very humid, especially at night.

Update 7/23/22
Last night I gathered another  2 hours of narrowband before the high clouds filled the sky. The next 2 nights look promising so I will wait and NOT do another interim processing. I'm having major knee surgery on Wednesday so I really want to get a few more hours on this nebula before I'm laid up.

Update 7/21/22
I added two more hours of narrowband, that's all the sky would give me. There is less noise and the colors may be better, but I would really like to get another 8 hours or so on this image. The extra 2 hours has improved the quality but it's still not where I want it to be ! I will wait patiently for the skies to clear. Last night I got 4 Sii images(12 minutes total) before the clouds filled the skies. Because this is an interim image, my processing was quick and dirty. When I accumulate more hours I will take my time and use more masks to carefully process this image.

The Red, Green, and Blue images were used for the stars only.

7/10/22
I started with a SHO palette and used a lot of PixInsight processing to bring out the blue. I know this is over-processed and needs many more hours of integration but nights have been cloudy for a long time with no sign of letting up. So, I went with what I had and processed it into oblivion. At only 2.5 hours of narrowband integration there was a lot of noise and weak signal. When the skies clear I will try to add another 10 hours(or more) of narrowband.

This image doesn't look anything like the typical Wikipedia image, mine is all false color. I like it pretty much the way it is but wait patiently for the skies to clear.

1/18/23
I reprocessed this image using a completely different palette and different processes in PixInsight.
The Sii data has some major problems and looks like a checkerboard. One day I will have to redo all the Sii images and give it another go.
The stars have some color problems and will also have to be redone.

1/19/23  Version 'K'
I tried a different way of processing the stars and I think they have less color aberations.
The palette is more realistic and less dramatic,  but I think it is a more natural rendition of this area of the sky.
I am always working to make the images better, but my definition of 'better' seems to change over time.
